I can answer this question since I am president of the non-profit that runs Walt Disney's Barn
You are correct, we are not associated with the Disney Company. We are running the barn for the Walt Disney Family Foundation but because we are a 501(c)3 we do raise money for our own projects. The mine train is one of those. We don't actually own it. It is owned by the Disney Archives but they have no funding or resources to restore it. We entered into an agreement with them to do the work and in exchange we get to display it for 10 years with possible renewals after that so essentially it will be at Walt's Barn (www.carolwood.org) for a long time. We previously purchased and restored one of the original Disneyland railroad cars and it is also on display.
Our mission is to preserve Walt Disney's love of trains.
We do not receive any financial support from the Disney Company so that's why we are asking for donations.
If anyone is going to be in the Los Angeles area,I invite you to visit the barn and check us out.
Feel free to email me with any questions.
Thanks
