IIRC, even after the Oriental Refinery closed in September of 1964 the D&RGW ran n.g. trains well into December and at least one year into early January before shutting down.  It was the heavier snows later in the winter that blocked the line from January 'til May in 1965, '66, '67 and '68.  The very last D&RGW freight over Cumbres was exactly a year after your photo above – December 5, 1968 – with #483 returning from Chama to Alamosa with two cabeese the following day while #473 continued on to Durango with #481 dead-in-train.  (See [ngdiscussion.net] et seq for photos.)
