The information in my prior post regarding the in cab conversation came directly from close friend Ernie Robart who photographed the entire wreck and also the two cranes used to re-rail the locomotive.
The lesson learned is that when you clear the track you want power but as little other weight behind the power, thereby increase the ability to stop as quick as possible. The momentum in the passenger car while pushing the flanger and work train engine helped push it further off the track and almost to rolling the engine down the hill. It was very close to killing crew men.
When a Rotary is in snow where a rock could be hidden, it should uncouple its tailing support cars to only have the power it needs for its slow advance, and quicker stopping ability. Rear engine of the consist can forward the support cars of the rotary train. With just having long hoses and a pump, the water canteen car can provide just as much support by being behind the first locomotive that is coupled to the rotary's tender. The water car's weight can be kept away from the rotary which might need to stop quickly.
