The dual gauge pockets were originally applied to the 487 and 488 when the K-36's were based out of Salida for use on the Valley line as mentioned. When the 37's were brought up in 1933 to be based out of Salida the 492 and 496 were fitted with the dual gauge pockets. They were used for switching on that line not in Salida or Alamosa. The 496's tender still survives today and is behind 494 in Antonio with the dual gauge coupler still intact. This photo is from 1940 if I recall correctly, 496 kept her dual gauge pocket until she was scrapped in 1955. Hope this helps.
