After my third posting above showing 497 on the morning Cumbres turn, I checked my negative strips and found that the 497-487 Cumbres turn left before the westbound train, and I followed the turn to Lobato before chasing the westbound, as shown below. When I was at the California RR museum 10 days ago before my ill-fated Amtrak trip, I bought a copy of Victor Hand's fabulous book
"A Steam Odyssey", and there on plate 30 is 497 approaching Lava tank on the morning of October 3, 1967. So without realizing it, I was in the company of one of railfan photography's masters, but I assume he continued east, chasing the two Cumbres turns that day.
