A dozen years ago (August 2006), on the Georgetown Loop (it was a very contentious time in Colorado NG history), the 2-6-2 #12 operating at the time had broken one of the driving axles off where it met the wheel. I believe the discussion at the time had settled around the root cause being a weld on the axle. I remember seeing somewhere a picture of #12 being towed back to the shop (photo possibly taken going around a curve in broad daylight) showing the absence of one driving wheel and the exposed axle and driving box. I'm wanting to use it for instructional purposes as to why you aren't permitted to weld on axles.
Can anyone help locate this pic that I once saw? A different picture of the same locomotive showing essentially the same issue would also be helpful.
Thanks,
Adam
