The extension wings are controlled from the caboose, as are all of the flanger's functions. Originally, the extension blades had simple, heavy arms that held the wings out and the had to be manually moved at every switch stand and cattle guard. The wings now are air actuated using the old power reverse cylinders from engines 473 and 478. All these improvements were made by the D&S to flanger OF. OL still has the old fashioned system.
