Actually, $50 is pretty cheap if that was the only extra expense. Rental car people are known for jacking up costs the minute something does not go according to the original plan.
Rental cars are pretty scary when going to winter destinations such as Durango in February. I drove Highway 50 across Nevada at night a few years back and it snowed across all 7 summits. I was wicked concerned that they'd close the passes to vehicles without chains. Lately, I've taken to renting 4WD SUVs for winter trips, and bringing a small packable snow shovel and brush in my suitcase, since rental car companies often give you nothing for dealing with the winter weather. I still haven't figured out how to pack chains.....
Considering how many times I have done winter trips to places like Durango and Ely, I have been extraordinarily lucky......which means I am probably DUE for ending up snowbound.
