While there wouldn't be temperature extremes in the stock vs a box car sitting in the hot sun, it might also have had to do with stock cars being a very "seasonal use" type of car... meaning that during certain seasons, they just laid around.

I think coal was occaisonally loaded in stock cars back in the day on the D&RG.

Today, food safety people would frown upon loading fruit in a stock car for obvious reasons smiling smiley.
