James,

The Glenbrook Vintage Railway and Dunedin Railways(originally called the Otago Excursion Train Trust, later the Taieri Gorge Railway) went with Yellow stock to differentiate themselves from the NZR at the time in light Blue for Mainline and Red for the Suburban services, and the Steam Inc sticking with the original NZGR Carnation Red. Newcomer Mainline Steam went with a Navy Blue. There have been some other Dunedin Railways carriages painted the Southerner Blue scheme plus one DJ loco.

You're correct on the Carriage lengths but there are some 50ftr's in the mix, and as for the turbo whine ......I can't stand it either. Mentioned this just the other day with one of the old retired guys here, they turned it off during the day since they normally didn't use the Headlight until they were running and got used to being on Diesels.
