These were built to spread the weight out for use on light rail lines. They were also used on shorter runs. Then when used on longer runs the extra water cars were added.
Olaf. The GEA garrets were also hand-fired if I recall correctly. Imagine doing that on Montague Pass!!!! Another reason the GMAM took over the duties. We got a GMAM hauling
a dead GEA in 1984 out of Breyton. Headed to scrap no doubt.
Nice photos. South Africa was the best place on earth for steam in the 70 and 80's.
