On my earlier post "Unsafe acts on the narrow gauge" I stated a length of 200 miles for the Port Elisabeth - Avontuur narrow gauge line in South Africa. Even though the SA narrow gauge was not the intended topic of the posting, that unique narrow gauge RR deserves to be correctly covered. The PE-Avontuur line, as far as I know, was the world's longest 2-foot gauge line at 177 miles. Two branches connected to the main line: the Gamtoos - Patensie branch of 15 miles, and a private branch from Loerie to a cement plant in Port Elisabeth of about 14 miles, for a total system length of 206 miles. A few pictures of this ng in the 1970s are attached.
