Thanks, Russo, for the Gato photos. After passing the oiled stretch on Bocea Hill they probably had no further use for sand bags that day. I don't remember if the two engines still had the sand bags on the running boards during the next days struggle to Cumbres, when the extra sand would have been extremely useful. Jim Marcus could have had all the slipping action he wanted without oiling the rails or endangering others. Alas Jim Marcus died young and has been gone a long time. Even though he was kind of a wild character we did exchange letters and photos for a number of years.
In any event he was an excellent photographer and took some great photos.
