Mark: The whistle signals you asked about:
1. Leaving the yard in Chama is the rolling brake test. One whistle is the set of the brakes, the two responses are I understand we had a good set.
2. The River bridge is a long and a short - a warning whistle telling anyone on the bridge it would behoove them to get clear.
3. A station whistle - one long is the engineer asking the Conductor there's a station ahead are we stopping. The two short response, after a signal from the conductor is no. Three shorts in response would mean the train was stoping.
4. Approaching Cumbres (the closest one to the summit) is another warning whistle for the old Hwy 17 trestle.
