Today we laid the last rail on the Ridgway Railroad Museum's 1/2-mile operations loop! We still need to do final leveling and final ballasting, etc, but the loop is now operational, one week short of one year after the start of the project. Our recreation of RGS Motor 1 took a victory lap shortly after noon today, so we are forging ahead with our other development plans. As another quick update, RGS coach 252 is now painted and lettered, with new clerestory windows. We have already rebuilt both end platforms and replaced the siding. Next step is asbestos remediation in the next month or so, then we start on the interior.
One year ago we were totally located at our original location and limited to about 300 feet of demonstration track. Now we have all rolling stock located to our new site in town, with the protective train shed relocated and in place, and a 1/2 mile loop that will allow us to run extended distances. Kudos to our approximately dozen hard-working volunteers who made it happen.
