SMC2 served on the South East Division which is basically the other end of the state and separated by 600 km of broad gauge railway.
SMC2 was retired at about the same time, the engine unit was reborn as a jetty shunting 2-2-0 steam engine and the carriage unit consigned to a farm as a shed.
The crew that restored SMC1 tracked down the carriage unit to a a farm in the SE of the state, but unfortunately only found the front half of the carriage, and then it had one end cut out and the farmer parked his little Suzuki 4WD inside it. They were able to rescue windows and fittings to aid in the restoration of SMC1.
The restoration of SMC1 was a remarkable experience, fortunately it had many thick coats of garish paint applied over the years as a park display item that pretty well saved all the timber. Many hours of paint stripping and sanding got it back to what we see, no external timber was replaced!
