No 4000 class boxcars were converted to passenger service. One infamous car was 209, noted for having its original wood carlines in the roof. Each carline had a pad to ease the pain from inevitable collision with your forehead. Inevitably, the car ended up in the middle of the train where everyone got to duck. Eventually there was an incident where the angle cock got broken off the brake pipe on one end. I went out there with a pipe threader to put some thread on the end of the pipe. As I was cranking away on the pipe threader, the rotten brake pipe broke off again, right where it made a curve. As I could not get any more threads on the pipe. We declared 209 Bad Ordered.
There was considerable rejoicing from all concerned.
BTW, car 200 was the only car to have interior carpet. It was an indoor/outdoor type carpet, but still a one-of-a-kind. The coach cleaners didn't like it because it was real hard to sweep the carpeted floor. And.. of course we put it right behind the engine leaving Chama, so it got more than its share of cinders.
