There is a steam driving course in Wolsztyn, Poland - you take over from the engineer who stands behind you and drive the train. Nothing unusual about that except this is on the state owned railway PKP and you pick up and drop off passengers, keep to a tight schedule swith sppeds up to 50 mph and for part of the way you're on a main line. Poland has many road crossings but few are guarded or have barriers, at least on the line this train operates. I was told that if I saw a vehicle on the line and thought we were going to hit it I had to get behind the boiler immediately to avoid getting hit by car and body parts that inevitably hurtle past or even through the cab!
I suppose they must have learnt by experience.
