492 was backwards because the front drawbar had been yanked out of it while trying to get unstuck from a snowdrift at MP 319 just west of Osier. It had to be hauled back to Alamosa backwards on the rear of the train.
It was common to put the rear engine on a rotary train backwards behind the caboose. But the engine had a snow plow in case it had to blaze a trail in retreat. It has been said that cabooses are really poor at buckling snow when backing up.
