About 45 years ago, Santa Fe locomotive engineer, who was also a long-time railfan, told me that his observation was that east of the Mississippi the crews used day-time flag (same as lantern) signals; and west of the Mississippi the "come-to-me" and "go-away-from-me" hand signals were used.
This gentleman was a long-time member of the Los Angels area Pacific Railroad Society and his daughter inherited his interest and she later served as President of PRS and still later gave up a legal carrier to go to work as a trainman for Amtrak.
