For some reason I have always attributed "through the weeds not around them" to DRGW engiineman Andy Payne. I chased the DRGW ng. from 1961 to 1968. In 1961 the track was in pretty good shape and while the ballast was mostly native earth (dirt) it was relatively well maintained and long stretches were pretty weed free. In particular line and surface was pretty good. The DRGW was running long trains and for the most part they got over the road with minimal derailments. The DRGW was not a streak of rust like the poor bankrupt RGS. But clearly toward the end as trains became fewer and fewer and abandonment more and more imminent, the weeds got a lot worse. But that was hardly typical of the DRGW ng. over its life.
