Common North American practice is to mount traction motors at three points - two bearings on the axle, and a third on the motor to the truck frame or bolster. There are some exceptions, the GA8s being one, many LRTs have mono-motors, and some of the old heavy straight electrics used a variety of other arrangements.

I believe this is the traction-motor gear-unit combination for GE 47 ton C&TS #19 posted on NGDF years ago by Carlos Llamas. The upper photo shows how the gear unit is mounted to the axle, and the double reduction gearing. By the looks of the remaining space, this arrangement might work down to 30" gage. The second photo shows the armature/brush access covers now in place on the traction motor. Notice the bolt and coil springs on the right hand corner. This is the third mounting point that not only will support the traction motor, but also deal with the torque applied in either direction. The parallel mount to the gear unit and need for the traction motor to extend past the wheel is obvious.

This is supposed to be off WP&Y 95 photo by Dick Bell - the two bearing surfaces for the traction motor to axle are easily visible. This would be a GHM842 traction motor which is a single-reduction axle-hung type. The pinion gear on the end of the armature turns the gear mounted on the axle.

Credit to Boerries Burkhardt for WP&Y 114 which would be a GE764 traction motor. The rectangular hole in the top of the motor is where the bellows to connect to the traction motor blower duct would be. On either side of the traction motor leads you can see the lubricant access for the traction motor axle support bearings. The far end of the traction motor would have a nose support for the third point. There isn't a whole lot of room to put any bigger motor between the axles. Trying to wedge the gearing and armature/brushes doesn't leave much room for the field and armature coils. The GE761 would be almost identical except about 3 inches wider.
