Watching the D&S turn double-headed trains in Silverton taught me that having two engines allows the entire length of the tail track to be used for cars.
I've seen a diesel take two passenger cars around the Rockwood wye, so figure that the tail track is three car lengths long. One engine can push three cars into the tail track, then the other engine, prepositioned on the other leg of the wye, can pull those three cars out. Repeat until the entire train is turned.
If it sounds like model railroading it's because the D&SNG crews made it look as easy as model railroading!
