Well we took Dusty's advice and found some white glass for the backing. The stuff was somewhat hard to find, and we ended up locating it at a local stained glass shop. Ironically, the truck that was blocking my brother from parking at the glass shop was the delivery truck bringing this sheet of glass. If we had walked in 10 minutes sooner, it would have been "Sorry we don't have any!"
We're making 4 of these... 2 for loco, and 2 for tender. It is my understanding that the 488 has been chosen as the stand-in for the 483. If the railroad allows, I'll leave the glass and send new filters to fit the 488 (she's my baby!) Otherwise, I'll have them shipped back and make some fancy light boxes or something.
I like the results using the white glass, as the numbers seem to "pop out" better without back lighting. I wrapped the diffuser/filter/front glass with electrical tape to keep the whole package together.
Better light diffusion as well.
'Bout time to ship these babies to Chama to see if they fit. I learned that 6 1/2" x 11 3/8" means different things to different glass cutters!
