See Earl's post above. It should be possible to have an operating RPO that would cancel the mail on the train. The C&TS has done this before. The big questions would seem to be:
* Will the Postal Service agree to it and provide an employee who will serve as mail clerk, and cancel mail on the train?
* Is the restored RPO car complete enough for operation as an RPO - sorting table, racks for mail bags, letter case, etc?
* Is the C&TS willing to work with this?
* When would be the ideal time? Is it really on opening day, on top of everything else; or should it be a different date to make things less stressful for the C&TS and USPS?
In any case, the idea of the train bearing Uncle Sam's mail on the head end is appealing. With the correct marketing, you might get a bunch of stamp collectors involved as well. A cover with artwork of R.W. Richardson, who was a stamp collector as well as locomotive collector?
