All the stale line crossings were also marked by a nice square stone monument post with the direction of the boundary neatly carved into the top. All except the one just north of Cresco Siding. There is no monument there. However, for years Mile Post 344 in Chama, instead of being a standard wood post was a nice stone monument, with a nice line carved into the top, making one wonder if something else was up in the location of the state line at Cresco, and the monument was removed and re-purposed as the milepost in Chama. I noticed that someone has replaced the stone mile post with a "proper" wooden one. What became of the old stone mile post?
All of the legal mumbo-jumbo does not address the fact that the CO/NM state line shifts about a 1/2 mile southward just east of Edith, CO. According to my DeLorme Atlas, the state line to the west of Edith is at 37 degrees, 00 minutes, east of Edith the state line is 36 degrees, 59 min, 37 sec. which continues all the way to the corner of CO/OK/NM.
An interesting fact to ponder is the distance between what is currently believed to be the state line just down grade from the west switch at Cresco and the railroad's installed marker at the east switch seems to be about the same distance as the offset in the boundary near Edith.
