I'd add one more to the above comments: steamers were hard on track. Perfect balance was impossible to achieve, and they heavily pounded track. N&W's decision to finally scrap steam was based on the estimate of the savings they would have in track maintenance by converting to diesel. Those savings allowed them to purchase the Virginian RR, so they were indeed substantial. The decision was made in '56 or '57, and by '59 all steam was gone.
