It appears that your Grandpa also rode along on that year's first freight to Durango on 05/28/68 — at least as far as Antonito, and maybe to Chama. See the fourth & fifth photos on [ngdiscussion.net] — it looks to me like that's him in the passenger seat of the high-railer following the train, and IIRC he's in a couple more photos elsewhere on that thread.
