Why NC landowners are suing CSX

A group of North Carolina landowners has filed a lawsuit against Jacksonville, Florida-based train company CSX, alleging one of its locomotives caused a wildfire that destroyed their timberland.
Dubbed “the Compass Pointe Fire” for its proximity to Brunswick County’s Compass Pointe subdivision, the blaze hit “all of the timber” on 174 acres that the plaintiffs own near the railroad track, the complaint claims.
According to the lawsuit, North Carolina Forest Service fire investigators determined a CSX locomotive caused the fire.
A CSX spokeswoman declined to comment on the case.
News reports at the time said the fire prompted
neighborhood evacuations when it swept through about 500 acres in April 2015. Damages to homes, structures and timber from the blaze were reportedly
estimated at nearly $1 million.
