One concept to think about is to never let your gas tank get below half tank.
The utility company I work for has a directive that none of its vehicles are never to be below half tank.
This a good practice for private vehicles. Should your next stop have a power outage or some other problem, you can always continue on down the road or get back to where you came from. I follow this concept about 75% of the time and for sure when I'll traveling through the hinterland. You never know when there will be a road blockage that will cause you to turn around or take a long detour.
