The immediate thing that jumps to mind is what was done on the few engines with Vanderbilt tenders prior the 40's.
Or what was done on some smaller tenders, moving the text/logo around to fit appropriately.
While there exist standards for lettering, the D&RGW had a nagging propensity to completely ignore documentation and 'standard practice' in favor of what would work easily in a pinch.
