Earlier we had a thread where discussion revolved around hiking into Cresco. The first time I did that was on June 5th, 1968, as the first eastbound freight of the year was running up the grade from Chama to Cumbres. Road engine was 483, and the rear helper was 493. No crossing back then of course, and a lot less foliage than today. I posted these before, but since we are close to the 50th Anniversary of these shots, am reposting. Can't let Russ have all the 1968 Glory can we?
By the way this scene is captured on film by my brother and is in our "Last Steam Freights 1968" show. It is 100 minutes on 2 dvd's. Speed correction and lots of other fixes caused the final files to be too big for one dvd. Enjoy the slides. This is probably my favorite location of the 1968 trip.
