Supposedly the term 'rivet counter' came from an old Lionel toy train ad that stated that their new scale model New York Central Hudson locomotive was "accurate down to the number of rivets in the tender". Somebody went out and counted, and sent Lionel a letter stating they were 'two rivets short' in their model from the real thing. Old Josh went down with some of his board of directors to the NYC yard and counted a tender themselves and found out the guy was right, so they had to change their advertising on their locomotive.
