To further clarify the situation (or muddy the waters), here are the operators of the line from Antonito to Cumbres –
D&RG
: Dec. 1880 - July 1921 = 40 years, 7 months
D&RG
W: July 1921 - Dec. 1968 = 47 years, 5 months *
C&TS
: Sept. 1970 - March 2018 = 47 years, 6 months *
* Although the D&RGW last
operated over Cumbres Pass on Dec. 6, 1968 (when #483 returned from Chama to Alamosa with one caboose),
the
ownership wasn't transferred to the bi-state commission until sometime in 1970 (July, IIRC). True, the first train of cars & locos was de-
livered from the D&RGW to the C&TS on September 1, 1970, but the last two figures might more accurately be given (per ownership) as –
D&RGW
: July 1921 - July 1970 = 49 years
C&TS
: July 1970 - March 2018 = 47 years, 8 months
Which means the C&TS still has sixteen months to go before catching up to the D&RGW as longest
owner of the
Narrow Gauge Over Cumbres. OTOH, K-36's #483, #484, #487, #488 and #489 have already been owned & operated by the C&TS longer than they were owned & operated by the D&RGW.

p.s. See the long thread beginning at [
ngdiscussion.net] for descriptions and photos of C&TS operations during September & October of 1970.
pps. Was that first forty years divided between the D&RG Rail
way and the D&RG Rail
road at some point??
