Two wild guesses -
1. Better light. IF weather allows, open the roundhouse doors
. . .
2. Room to pull out a leaking flue or two – open the roundhouse doors.
(This applies only in "emergencies", since major overhauls would be done in the shops at Alamosa or Salida.)
