Different forms were suited to different fuel types. It's hard to list anything without being tempted to add a lot of disclaimers. In general there's a tradeoff between stopping sparks versus reduction of draft.
For wood fuel, at least, the radley & hunter stack (and the derived rushton) seemed generally regarded as highly effective.
