Old skis were often made of wood and I guess you could burn them to dispose of them if they broke beyond repair. If they were trashed, they might as well be burned to make some steam. It usually helps, however, to insert the fuel into the firebox via the opening at the other end. Inserting fuel in the reverse method may be less efficient than the fireman had hoped.
