Then there was the time that "boy fireman" (me) was working with a fine gentleman named Jack Spence. Spence was an ex CB&Q Road Foreman of Engines and a damn fine fellow. One day I warmed up the #14 in preparation for the day and since I was done with my chores and he hadn't yet arrived I decided to help him with his. So I filled the hydrostatic lubricator and got it working. With the chores done I had some spare time so I wandered in to the depot to visit with the ticket agent. In a bit in wanders Spence, very pointedly wiping himself down! He, in a steady tone, mentioned that I might want to go use the squirt hose on the inside of the cab! Seems he didn't notice the lubricator was hot! When I got to the cab there was lube oil EVERYWHERE. When he came up to the engine to run the first trip the cab was VERY clean and his seat was dry! He did mention later that maybe it would be best to leave the engineer's work for the engineer! JP
