As to the
Grande total, I have no idea David -
IIRC, on the S.P. narrow gauge only two engines had slide valves operated by Walschearts gear – 2-8-0 #1* and 4-6-0 #18 – but both of these engines had inside frames.
Turning your question around, "How many outside-frame narrow-gauge engines had piston valves operated by Stephenson valve gear?", Earl Knoob and I have both conjectured that there were at least four – K-27s #454, #456, #458 and #461 – since the only logical reason for their piston valves to be located inboard of their cylinders would be to allow the valve stems to line up with their existing Stephenson gear. When later converted to Walschearts valve gear, to avoid the expense of casting new cylinders with outboard piston valves an extra rocker or crank was used to line up the radius rods and combination levers to the valve stems of these four engines. (See [

* This was the 2nd #1 on the S.P. narrow gauge; the first #1 was a 4-4-0.
