The treatment might evaporate along with the water. I don't know if this is relevant, but when I was serving aboard an aircraft carrier the drinking water often tasted like kerosene. The reason was that the intake for the evaporators was located aft of the overflow discharge for the jet fuel. The JP5 would evaporate right along with the sea water. Coffee made with that stuff tasted horrible.
