The Brits reduced reciprocating mass by using 3 and 4 cylinder locos which had smaller and lighter pistons as well as lighter rods. Mallard, the Gresley A4 pacific that holds the world speed record was a 3 cylinder machine. This also allowed power impulses every 60 degrees instead of 90 degrees. Of course, this required inside motion and a crank axle which meant more complexity.
