Earl,
Those things we called Detonators, aka Fog Signals except NZR's were Red
Occasionally these were found to be out of date and had to be destroyed before supplying new cans of 12 to the Loco. Often placed along the rail in a random spacing outside the fuelhouse designed to give the maximum audible effects.
These were placed on each rail at 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 3 spaced 10 metres apart at 1200 metres from obstruction or disabled train as per Rule 74. If on a descending grade approach to said disabled train, then the last 3 spaced 10 metres apart were out at 1500 metres.
We didn't use any Flares though, them's for boaties.
