This doesn't surprise me that much. 168 had its original 1883 boiler replaced around 1912-1915. It would have seen regular service until the mid-1920's, then increasingly less use until withdrawn in the early 1930's. I think 168's last regular use would have been on the Lake City Branch in 1933. So, 168's boiler has something less 20 years of service on it, and the last years would have been in fairly light service.
