Ha ha Doug, thanks but just the already posted picture was enough.
See, I was putting a round peg in a round hole and getting stuck both literally and figuratively, the cam would only come out in one direction only. Has to do with the angle overcoming the pressure from the spring. Hence the vee notch shown in your picture.
What I have ended up with here inadvertently, is a handle that goes into Power to the left, but will not stay there if the operator lets go of the handle. Like a deadmans interlock, should be good for novice drivers eh! If the latching arm can be tripped by the addition of a pull rod then the handle will go to the right in Power and stay put until the operator moves it to centre off. Then the handle is unable to return to continuous power without again tripping the latching arm. Reversing is accomplished by a separate dp-dt switch rather than opposite movement of the lever.

This way will have an authentic single lever controller that has the deadmans safety feature without the modern twin lever controller that was fitted to later models. Most of the early Diesels on NZR had deadmans pedals but those were in the South Island by the time I joined the job so I'm used to a Vigilance Device never having driven one with a deadmans hence my reluctance to add one to my Motor.
