My main question was on the rail length, my second question was about the rail weight.)

The 1923 textbook Logging, by Prof. Ralph C. Bryant, can be (legally) dowloaded using the following link:

The scan quality is not perfect, but the text is readable and the quality of the line drawings is more or less useful.
The quality of the photos is very bad though. (Maybe we should ask Mr. Marshall to supply better quality scans of the pages which contain illustrations?)

When you use the PDF WITH TEXT download option, you get a searchable pdf file.
