We used a photo in George Niederauer's 315 book on page 92 dated from the spring of 1941 for the lettering that was on 315 this year. The Montrose shops used this style on several engines that received the flying Rio Grande in 1941. After 315 received the new main rod and was rebuilt into her switcher configuration in Alamosa during 1941 she was given the standard D&RGW lettering on the cab. This was the configuration she had in Durango from 1941 until her retirement in 1949.
John Bush and the C&TS crew did the movie paint lettering she wore this summer. The movie paint is wax that is dyed black with the vinyl lettering applied to the wax.
Fred Folk always wanted to see 315 wearing the Flying Rio Grande. It was a fitting tribute to Fred we were able to have her wear this lettering this year for her 10th anniversary.
