A side-bar to the 1991 story. My plan that year revolved around Railfair 91. We chased the doubleheader with 844 and 3985 from Cheyenne for 2 days to Salt Lake City. Then after a day off, 3985 powered 2 days of trips to McCammon, Idaho. Then we left and headed for Southern California. My contact informed me the 3751 was not going to be ready thus it was not going to Sacramento. We were nearly to California. In the course of talking with him on Cajon Pass he mentioned something about the C&TS running a Rotary on May 3rd I believe. So after a couple of calls I confirmed this, but it was 10-12 days from that point. We stuck around California and shot some various diesels on mainlines and such, then visited the Alcos at Apache en route to Chama. I had called my brother and he flew to Albuq. We purchased a ticket for the Friends chase train on day 2 which my brother rode. 3 years previous I had photographed plows in Canada, and the 2 plow videos had sold very well, so I figured this would be the best of both worlds- Steam and Plow!!! This was before internet and info did not always get around so quickly. I wound up finding out about this by a misfortunate of the 3751 not running, and had not planned on it since I didn't know about it. So thats the rest of the story. I think that was about a month trip and my wife and daughter were there as well. Hard to believe that was 26 years ago!!! We got to Chama a couple days early and saw a lot of the prep for the Rotary run, which included a little break-in run with 487 and 488 out to Lobato. They had been freshly painted but no lettering on the tender for this break-in. Good Times!!
