Back in 1968 I was a student in junior high school, as it was called then. Despite being too young to vote, I would become active in the effort to save the narrow gauge in a very small way: collecting signatures on petitions to the state legislatures to purchase at least a portion of the railroad from the D&RGW. I think this is where I actually began my work in the field of historic preservation and public history, long before reaching college and graduate school.
