Hi,
As I recall from several sources, the shay was originally the Silverton RR's. Mears had the Silverton RR and the RGS swap locos such that a rod engine was on the Siverton and the shay was on the RGS.
I think the shay was mostly used on the 5% Enterprise (?) branch to some mines.
As per "Locomotives of the Rio Grande" page 29; RGS 34 was the shay. It was used for construction of the RGS from Durango. RGS 1st 34 was an early D&RG 2-8-0 "La Plata" that went to the Silverton as their #101. Trade was in 1892. It was used on the Blackhawk-Enterprise branch of the RGS. It went to Ashland Lumber in 1899 (Wisconson), then to Thompson Brothers Lumber in TX, then to Fidelity Lumber (TX) then to Turkey Creek Lumber in Mississippi and finally to Stark & Oldham Brothers Lumber in MS.
