That's a question that will plaque mankind forever.
When I bought the 0400 in 1973, she has been painted “caboose red” for the movie true grit. I did some sanding on her.... and will stand firm... that the final coat of the many colors of paint that the railroad put on, was boxcar red! I still say the RGS used whatever they had laying around. The inside walls of the caboose were painted aluminum/silver, probably leftover from the geese
